India
is a great melting pot of diverse cultures. There are an amazing
variety of languages, religions and ethnic groups. There are different
ethnic groups like the Hindi speakers of the North, the Tamils of
the South, the Bengalis of the East and The Nagas of the North-East.
Languages are equally diverse. India has almost 18 official languages.
There is diversity n religious belief too. India is unique as it
has significant number of adherents of all the major religions of
the world. Hinduism is the dominant religion of India followed by
80% of the population. Other religions are Islam (12% of the population
and the largest minority), Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism
and Judaism. Despite this diversity, there is great sense of unity
amongst the Indians.
India has exemplified all the
best of what the synthesis of Western materialism
and Eastern spiritualism can achieve. It is perhaps the only region
on earth where you will find the paradoxical scene of a particle
physicist, dripping after a morning dip in the temple pond, engrossed
in contemplative prayer in front of the neighboring temple. It is
easy to be baffled by such a situation but it's only under introspective
thought that we realize the physicist understands the truth of the
world in terms of his profession as well as his inner self. The
journey may be of varying hues but the ultimate truth and destination
is the same. Sane fully, it's the same truth the world is beginning
to understand.
The
states of India have comparatively rich cultures and even today
they continue to evolve in a soul-seeking manner. Even while deeply
entrenched within the positive nuances of their culture, the Indians
have embraced the positive influences of the West, especially the
superior technology in IT.
India is a heady brew of beaches, forests,
backwaters, hills and monuments. This part of the world has seen
some of the most spectacular regal dynasties to have graced the
earth and they have left behind a legacy of astonishing temples
and other monuments that baffles every visitor and points to the
magnificence of an age that once was. These dynasties extended into
South East Asia and the vestiges of the influence can still be seen
today.
The people of this country have extended
their hospitality since
times immemorial and this has been exemplified by a rich yet subtle
cuisine, known for its intricate flavors and varied recipes, some
carefully handed down through generations by word of mouth. It is
a culture that you will find very close to nature and perhaps the
first nescient attempts at nature conservation were practiced in
this region.
